About the California Attorney Registry
The California Attorney Registry is an independent index of the public attorney roll maintained by the State Bar of California. Every one of the 278,688 licensee records on that roll has a page here, whether or not the attorney has ever heard of this site, paid anything, or claimed the profile.
It was built on a plain observation: California publishes a complete, authoritative list of who may practice law in the state, and almost nothing that reads that list back to the public does so without a score, a rank, or a paywall attached. This registry adds provenance instead — where each fact came from, and what was confirmed.
What we hold to
The registry is not affiliated with the State Bar of California, with any court, or with the group of legacy directory brands operated under common ownership. It indexes a public record; it is not a party to it.
Directory order is mechanical — last name, first name, bar number — and no payment changes it. Optional memberships unlock profile features and clearly labeled placement in separate, marked positions. An attorney who pays nothing appears in exactly the same order as one who pays.
Contact details that appear on the official State Bar record are shown free on every profile. The registry does not paywall the public record or charge an attorney to be listed in it.
Every rendered fact traces to where it came from: the official roll, a public case of record, or a labeled attorney-supplied statement that has been reviewed. Figures on this site carry their source and observation date.
How this is paid for
Flat fees, decoupled from outcomes
Revenue comes from optional attorney memberships billed at a flat rate. Nothing is priced per case, per client, per inquiry, or as a share of anything an attorney earns. That is a deliberate constraint, not a pricing accident: a directory paid by the case has a financial stake in which attorney a reader picks, and this one must not.
What the money does not buy
It does not buy a rating, because none is issued. It does not buy position in the neutral order. It does not buy removal of a competitor, suppression of a public record, or a characterization of anyone as superior. Paid placement, where it appears, is labeled as such on the page it appears on — see the advertising policy.
Four things this is not
- Not a rating service. The registry issues no scores, stars, grades, badges of quality, or rankings, and it does not describe any attorney as superior to another or predict how a matter will come out.
- Not a lawyer referral service. It does not select counsel for a reader, forward a matter to a chosen attorney, or take a portion of any legal fee. California certifies lawyer referral services under a separate regime; the registry does not hold that certification and does not operate as one.
- Not legal advice. Everything published here, including the answers library, is general legal information about California law. Reading it creates no attorney-client relationship, and only an attorney who knows the facts of a matter can advise on it.
- Not the official record. The State Bar of California maintains that. Every profile links back to it, and for any time-sensitive question — license status above all — the State Bar record governs, not this page.
Correcting the record
An index built from public data will contain errors, and the useful question is what happens next. Write to info@californiaattorneyregistry.com with the page URL and what is wrong on it. A correction request is acknowledged within 3 business days.
- Where the official State Bar record and this site disagree, the official record wins and the page is corrected to match it — the registry does not arbitrate its own data against the source.
- Attorneys who want editorial control of their own page can claim and verify the profile and edit it directly, which is faster than any email.
- Corrections to legal information are made against the cited statute or decision. If a citation no longer supports the sentence it is attached to, the sentence changes.
