Text message program & opt-in disclosure

The California Attorney Registry sends text messages only to California-licensed attorneys who have claimed and verified their own professional listing. There are two kinds, and they are consented to separately: service messages — a one-time verification passcode when an attorney claims or signs in, and notices about activity on their own account — and, only for attorneys who additionally opt in, occasional promotional messages about the registry. Promotional consent is never required to use the registry or to receive a verification code, and either can be stopped on its own.

How you opt in

Consent is affirmative and per-request. During verification at /claim-profile, the attorney chooses to receive a code by text and must actively check a consent box that is unchecked by default; the "send code" control stays disabled until the box is checked, so no message is ever sent without affirmative consent. The mobile number is the one already published on the attorney's official State Bar of California record — the attorney confirms it rather than typing an arbitrary number, which is how the step also verifies identity. Consent to receive texts is never a condition of using the Registry; email verification is always offered as an alternative, and a recipient can re-enroll after opting out by replying START.

You can see and interact with this exact consent step — mobile field, unchecked checkbox, and disabled submit — on the live interactive opt-in preview.

The consent language

"I agree to receive text messages from the California Attorney Registry at the mobile number provided: one-time verification passcodes and notices about activity on my own account. These are service messages, not marketing. Message and data rates may apply. Message frequency varies; typically fewer than 10 per month. Reply HELP for help or STOP to unsubscribe. Reply START to re-subscribe. I have read and agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy."

A second, optional checkbox — unchecked by default and never required to use the registry or to receive verification codes — carries the promotional consent:

"I also agree to receive occasional promotional text messages about the California Attorney Registry. This is optional — I can use the registry and receive verification codes without agreeing to it. Message frequency varies; up to 4 messages per month. Reply HELP for help or STOP to unsubscribe. Reply START to re-subscribe."
